The standard we work to

The Americans with Disabilities Act names no technical standard for private businesses, so courts and settlements have settled on WCAG 2.1 Level AA. We build to WCAG 2.2 Level AA, which contains all of 2.1 AA and adds six criteria covering focus visibility, target size and form input.

What that means here

• Every page can be operated with a keyboard alone, and the focus indicator is always visible.
• A skip link jumps past the header straight to the page content.
• Text meets or exceeds 4.5:1 contrast; controls and meaningful graphics meet 3:1.
• Headings, lists, landmarks and form labels are marked up so screen readers can navigate them.
• Form errors are announced, tied to the field they belong to, and say how to fix the problem.
• Everything that moves can be stopped with the Motion control in the footer, and your system’s reduced-motion setting is honoured by default.
• The site reflows to a 320 px screen and to 400% zoom without horizontal scrolling.
• It stays usable in Windows high-contrast mode.

Known limitations

Some labels — navigation captions and the small chips — are set below 10 px. There is no WCAG minimum for font size and they meet the contrast requirement, but they are small, and browser zoom is the current answer. We are reviewing them.

The paper texture over the page is a translucent overlay. It darkens the page by under 5%, which our contrast figures account for, but it can stop automated checkers from measuring contrast at all.

How we test

Automated checks catch roughly a third of accessibility problems, so they are the floor rather than the finish. Every page here is also walked through with a keyboard, checked at 320 px and at 400% zoom, and reviewed against the WCAG 2.2 criteria one at a time.
